The key difference in this game is that only 50 land tiles are allowed to be in play, instead of the whole deck of 80.
So, in a 3 player game, 24 cards start in our hands. 4 are visible and 52 in the deck. When the deck is reduced to 26 cards (plus 4 on the table), then NO MORE land cards may be bought.
Penalty: 5 points per tile bought.
I've chosen maps with 30-45 land tiles in total. The total size of the map varies from very small to medium. Markets vary from 7 to 13. Let's see how we go...!

Game 3: Map 138 var 2
Game 4: Map 278 no var

I've only put in one variant 1 game because I dont think these maps will play very well with variant 1.
The second tournament draw will come out as soon as I fill the last spot. |

Just a reminder to players about the land rule that is key to this tournament...
When the deck hits 26 tiles, no more land may be bought! |

Wait... You *can* buy it right? You just take a 5 point penalty.
I can think of a few occasions when buying a land tile and taking the 5 point penalty might be worth it. |

if it's only ever worth 3 as part of a Hacienda, when would it be worth a -5 penalty..... you mean if it would join up to a land chain without a Hacienda of more than 2-3 land tiles I guess.
Hmm, well, I thought ideally the only time you take the extra land tile is by mistake, that's the whole point of this tournament right.... to not use the extra tiles for that exact reason?
Maybe -5 isn't harsh enough.... just so we are clear before it reaches that point. |

I don't think we should change the rules now. |

Well then you shouldn't be taking any -5 penalties accidentally on purpose, lol.
By the way, Kanga, are there any more Hacienda tourney's due to start soon? I only ask as I'm debating whether to set up a raft of my own games and wondered what the next few weeks might hold. |

I didn't want to totally destroy a player who broke the rules. perhaps 7 or 8 might have been a better penalty.
I'm away for a week next week, so the next tournaments will be created in 2 weeks time.. The current 3,4 and 5 player tournaments are all still in progress, albeit getting towards a conclusion. |

So, in my game, if I buy one more tile past the limit, I can use it to get a net nine points, one more if I hacienda the string it's on.
I stand to lose five for the penalty but gain nine, maybe ten. If I do it before the half, then I'd gain a net 13-15, because the benefit would be doubled, but the penalty only applies once.
Is that a crappy thing to do, or a strategic thing to do, or both? |

I think of it like fouling in basketball. The rules state you cannot do certain things, but clearly there are times when fouling and accepting the penalty is the best thing to do.
There was a guy in a game that I am playing who accidentally bought a land tile beyond 30.
If you say, "you absolutely cannot buy another land" then what would we do, start the game over? Since there's no way for us to know what kind of land he drew (if from the face down deck), there's no way for us to make sure he doesn't use it either.
In other words, the only way to "prevent" it is to assign a fixed penalty. And since the penalty is below your net gain, I would do it.
Kanga may increase the penalty for future tournaments, but for this one I would do it. |

Assuming nobody has done it already..
given that it seems clear I've underestimated the benefit of buying a land tile
I will increase the penalty to 10 points.
I really dont want players deliberately choosing to do this, the idea being the deck is meant to have run out.
If someone has already chosen to do it I suppose I'll have to stick with the 5. |

The idea is of course the deck has run out. So I'd prefer that players dont deliberately buy an extra tile even if it turns out to their advantage. |
