Don't scroll down if you still plan to solve it

Typical grid method problem. I doubt that Einstein would have bothered with anything so trivial. This thing takes a long time to solve, but it is hardly problem solving. |

Hmm, you really are an objectionable sort of chap!
This sort of problem trains the mind to collect a set of loosely linked data and sort it piece by piece into position. A very useful skill to have.
Do you also feel that a child learning their times tables is a waste of time given that everyone has easy access to a calculator in the western world? |

I suggest a new stat for this site: "Average foes per post". Guess who's going to excel in this stat . |

Or just change the code to just 1 post a week for him. Then he would have to choose who to abuse.
Can you imagine living/working with the guy???

A blatant straw man of course, taking place right after an ad hominem attack, but ironically I was not even trying to start an argument there.
I will uncharacteristically attempt to defuse a disagreement by clarifying what I meant through an example. If there are one thousand doors, and there is a prize behind one of them, you can solve the problem (ie. find the prize) by opening each door one by one until you get the prize. Such a method, while guaranteed to work, is hardly one that could be called "problem solving".
Similarly, I believe that this puzzle is best solved by the grid method, which involves all the mental gymnastics of snakes and ladders once the grid is set up correctly. The solution is trivial to find, you just have to have the patience to slog through until you get the answer.
Now, if I said "write a computer program using less than 40 lines of code to solve this puzzle"... THAT would be problem solving. |
