Please set up/join your games as quickly as possible. If you come to join a game and it has not yet been created then you should create it!
Password tournament.
I will review the progress from time to time and will at some stage indicate the required deadline for completion of games. I expect play (and joining) to be quicker than in the other leagues.
Scoring
I have decided to use a different system to decide promotions and relegations in this league. I will use a scoring method suggested to me by yoseph, with a few modifications.
In the first season the divisions will be random. For the purposes of positions within the divisions, the usual method will apply (1sts, followed by 2nds, 3rds and points lost by if necessary). The winner of the division will receive the coveted x!
However, players will also be awarded points based on position in each game.
1st 12 pts
2nd 0 pts
3rd -4 pts
4th -8pts
There will also be a bonus of (n-1) points for finishing first within a division (and a corresponding -1 point for not finishing first). n is the number in the division.
These points will then be used to rank players and decide on divisions for the following seasons. Each player will also have a very small initial random element added to their score, which will be used to break ties if overall scores are the same.
In subsequent seasons, points will be added to those already gained (although at the end of each season points will be reduced by 20% to give more weight to more recent performance).
As the total points awarded will be zero, new entrants after the first season will enter in the middle of the league. Players dropping out for a season or two will keep their score (subject to the 20% reduction) and so will re-enter around their leaving level.
If this doesn’t make sense – don’t worry, all you need to know is that the more wins you get the higher up you will be in subsequent seasons. |

If you are waiting for a game to start, perhaps you could pm the players who have not yet joined.
Unfortunately I don't have the time to do it at the moment. |

Just remove those people from the next season, problem solved. This season will take a bit longer to get off the ground of course, but eventually we'll be in a good place |

* For every entrant maintain a rating.
* For 3 player games divide up (1st 12 points, 3rd -12 points)
ie:
1st +12
2nd 0
3rd -12
1st= +6
2nd= -6
1st== 0
For 4 player games divide up (1st 12 points, 2nd 6 points, 3rd -6 points, 4th -12 points)
ie:
1st +12
2nd +6
3rd -6
4th -12
1st= +9
2nd= 0
3rd = -9
1st== +4
2nd== -4
1st=== 0
For 5 player games divide up (1st 12 points, 2nd 6 points, 4th -6 points, 5th -12 points)
ie:
1st +12
2nd +6
3rd 0
4th -6
5th -12
1st= +9
2nd= +3
3rd = -3
4th= -9
1st== +6
2nd== 0
3rd== -6
1st=== +3
2nd=== -3
1st==== 0
Note: the total change per game will always be 0
* All games played in the league or cup games should be included (ie where the aim of the game same).
* At the end of each season create a list of entrants wanting to play in the next season ordered first by rating and then by entrant order (in case 2 players have the same rating). Any players who have a not yet finished game where it has been their turn to move for the entire last week before the new season should be excluded from this list. They may be included again in a later season without penalty. (It is not very important that all games be finished before the new season and this will simply stop players from not completing their games - as they wont be assigned any new games until they have made a move - no more needing to evaluate games).
* In effect this will mean that new players start about half way through the list in the order that they entered.
* You can then divide the list up into groups of 6 or whatever as you have been doing.
You may also like to maintain one list of ratings for all 3, 4 and 5 games played in a league or keep them each as separate lists. |

While I consider myself to be reasonable proficient at math and various rating systems... I really don't get what you are proposing here at all. |

Ah, yoseph sent me a PM, and the big missing piece of the puzzle is that he was trying to work out how to deal with ties. I assumed it was trivial: take the position scores and distribute the points equitably, and with convenient scores like 12 and 6, that will always be possible. In fact, I assume that is why those were the final values chosen.
Now, a bit nitpicky here...

If three people tie for first in a 5-player game, that won't work . What you would want is
1/2/3 all get +6
4 gets -6
5 gets -12
Pedantically yours...

(I can't write this nicely as the system doesn't let me use quotes)
Knave was looking at the wrong 3 lines in his example,
looking at the right 3 lines then he has the same as what I wrote:
Here are the 3 lines he should have been looking at for his example:
For 5 player games divide up (1st 12 points, 2nd 6 points, 4th -6 points, 5th -12 points)
ie:
1st== +6
4th -6
5th -12
The line: 2nd== 0 that he had quoted is for when 3 players tie for 2nd equal (in which case he would also need the lines for 1st and 5th). |

Yes but 1st== doesn't make a lot sense without explanation. That's why I expanded it out. To make it easier to read. |

Still 4 players to join their games.
To get this started, I have decided to let Beast (who was left out of the original draw because he hadn't joined his 5 player games at the time) to take the place of the player who is last to join.
Hence the four remaining players have until 10 am (GMT) - it is currently just before 5 pm GMT - to join or risk losing their spot.
As this will be a quick tournament it shouldn't matter too much, as the next season will come round soon enough - hopefully.
Regarding the discussion on points above - if places are tied players will share the points (+ or -).
I decided to give extra weight in my scoring method to a win (1st place). I felt that the difference between winning and coming second should be (much) more than the difference between minor places. |

That unbalances the points. Every game should result in the same net change (not necessarily 0) in total division points. That is the whole point of the post I made. If you don't maintain that each game results in the same net change to division points, then playing for the tie will ultimately result in games you play in being worth more than games without ties.

Easiest way to do that is just a +3 kicker for a solo win. Goes against what I said above but in this case you are encouraging solo wins rather than encouraging ties. |
