Any questions or discussion that applies to the ladders as a whole, rather than just, say, the 3-Ladder, should go in this thread.

I suggest the following password format for games:

AR#LS#T# but don't use "#". Those are place holders. The first # is for 3, 4, or 5, depending on which ladder it is. The second is for the session (1, for now). The last is for the table number.

I think it would be better to keep it simple. I used tournament for the games I created. Davezum has also indicated he used ladder. Having a common password makes it easier for players to join, particularly if in multiple ladders.

agreed I've used Ladder for the games i've created.

Using the same password is much easier, both on the game creators and the joiners. It's certainly much easier than having to pm each player...

You don't want to pm any more than you need to. Some players will have missed the posts so will need to be chased up.

I have had very few games where players have joined the wrong one. Either someone forgets to put a password in at all or someone joins by mistake. As there is only one game each the second reason should not apply so a common password is definitely the way to go. tournament has been 'agreed' as the common password although ladder would probably do as well.

I would suggest you use the spreadsheet to create the list of games, to save on typing if nothing else - cut and paste works from a spreadsheet to this forum.

Listen to Gaditus. His is the voice of wisdom and experience.

That is, until 10PM GMT. Then his is the voice of a few too many Watney Red Barrels.

Just to say thanks for setting these ladders up and running them. Despite all the (helpful) comments so far I am sure everyone appreciates your efforts.

I agree with Gad. This was a great idea. And in the end, I don't really care what the password is. You have joined the ranks of the honorable gamemasters. Being a rather older gamer, that is a grand title from antiquity. Thanks! Cool

It took me three different passwords to enter my three ladder games, and I had to hunt through these threads to find out which things to guess as the password. We should definitely standardize for the future Smile

Two items:

1) All games started without any reminders via PMs from me. Thank you all.

2) In the stats I used to determine initial rankings, I mishandled Yospeh, who had never played a 5er but signed up for all three ladders. He is one of the top 3er players on the site and would have qualified for the last seat at the first table. Unfortunately, I coped his 3er stats into my 4er columns and his 4er stats into my 5er columns. This caused him to be at higher tables in the 4-Ladder and 5-Ladder than he would otherwise be, but put him all the way down with mediocrities like myself in the 3er.

So for Session 2 of the 3-Ladder, I will put him behind the Session 1 Table 2 winner and ahead of the Session 1 Table 1 trailer. Assuming no dropouts, that puts him in the first seat at Table 2, but if we have any dropouts, he'll be at Table 1.

Note: The initial ranking system was not meant to be perfect. I think it's decent, but I checked each player when they signed up, not simultaneously, as I don't have database query access to game results here. The system was just meant to give us something better than completely random to start with. So I'm not interested in spending time addressing minor complaints with that system. But in the case of Yoseph, I though my error would unfairly put a player in a position where it would take a very long time for him to reach his level, so I'm intervening.

Of course, if Yoseph fails to beat me and tphon on Table 11, he should be ribbed mercilessly for unsuccessfully slumming, but he'll still be moved up for Session 2. :D
