i'm polling to see if there might be interest in a Tikal tournament with the following format:

(1) a field of 6 players, each with a minimum of 50 games under their belt
(2) each tournament game played heads up (2-player)
(3) each player plays every other player twice, one game using the STANDARD format, the other using the AUCTION format
(4) 5 rounds of play with each player playing 2 different opponents in each round, for a total of 10 games per player
(5) 2 points awarded for a win, 1 point for a tie (20 total points would be a perfect score)
(6) tournament players agree to take at least one turn per game per day unless they are without an internet connection or their significant other has conflicting plans (i'd ask that you put up the suitcase if you can't play at that pace for more than a day)

if you're interested, please post on this discussion thread. if there's enough interest, i'll set up the pairings for each round and post the results as we go along.

thanks for all the interest. my original plan was to have a field of 6 players, first come first served, but there's no way i'm going to leave Saul out of this contest because, quite simply, his record proves he's the man to beat in heads up games

so we'll kick off a 7 player heads up Tikal tournament today. that means there will be 6 rounds where each of us plays 2 games against different opponents. i thought about having a round consist of a standard game and an auction game for each player but with an odd number of players that won't work. so to make things fair we'll all play the same format each round, and we'll alternate formats every round. we'll start with the simpler standard format and end with the more challenging auction format:

round 1 = standard
round 2 = auction
round 3 = standard
round 4 = auction (play same opponents as round 1)
round 5 = standard (play same opponents as round 2)
round 6 = auction (play same opponents as round 3)

my next post will set up the first round match ups. there's going to be a total of 42 games - 12 games apiece - before we crown a winner (and a possible "playoff" game between the 2 high scorers), and i'd like to finish no later than Labor Day, so it's very important for all of us to take our turns as quickly as possible. by all means take enough time to put some thought into your strategies but please don't dawdle over every move
