This is only my understanding...
Swiss tourneys are useful for the following reasons:
First, they keep everyone playing. In prize tourneys, there are often prizes for more than just first place. In a 64-player Chess tourney, there could be prizes all the way tdown to 20th place (for example). Swiss gives a fairly accurate representation of 20th place without all 64 players having to play each other (only 8 games are required). Also it means that if you turn up at 10:00 for a day's chess, you're not going home at 10:30. Moreover, as the tourney goes on, you are more likely to be playing peple of your level, thus giving you a better match.
Secondly, many 64-player tourneys would stop after 6 rounds, work out the top 8 players, then pit them into a knockout. Thus you can get a result inside one day, plus all the participants got a whole day's chess in.
Now, seeing as we're not exactly constrained for time here, maybe there are better options than swiss. It's only an idea. Perhaps everyone playing everyone else could be arranged. Maybe set up leagues of 8-man divisions, with promotions and relegations.
Or maybe I'm getting a bit carried away... |

I'm in whatever someone else sets up. Lamentably, I'm pretty busy these days and won't coordinate it. |

Congrats to fendwick on a well-deserved win!
I liked the format a lot - after the first game (in which I got killed by fendwick), most of the matches were pretty close so it felt like the Swiss system did its job. And I'm definitely in next time someone wants to run a Reef Encounter tournament - whatever the format. |

Congrats to Fendwick!
I would also be interested in another tourney (whatever the format). I quite liked the one-to-one's. |

I'm organizing a Reef Encounter tournament; there is more info here: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/154925
Look forward to seeing a nice turnout of those players from last tournament who were interested in playing again... |
