http://boredgamegeeks.blogspot.com/2006/10/mathematics-game-design-part-one.html
Basically argues about having to make mathematical calculations. Actually I enjoy this face to face as it gives me something to do while waiting of others to propose a bribe or place a plantation tile, etc.
The problem is if it was implemented then is it real-time as each and every plantation is placed or just at the end of the drying phase? I vote for end of the drying phase and at least this leaves the current calculations up to the user.
In a face to face game one can calculate a players 14 points for example for a banana plantation and easily remember that over the course of a game. Multiple games of Santiago concurrently it'd be most difficult to remember it so everytime you load a game you got to make a quick calculated assessment. |

I really like Santiago. But there's two things I don't like about it on SBW.
First, money is supposed to be hidden. SBW should make it hidden.
Now, if the money is not hidden, then it becomes a game with all open information. If it's going to be open on SBW, then I would want real time scoring. Since scoring is ultimately money, I would want to see it after EVERY move. Basically at any given point in the game I am calculating up the entire board and the money in each players hand anyway. So why not use the the power of computers and just present me with the calculated totals? |

I don't think money should be hidden. If it is hidden, I and many other players will simply keep a log of all money spent, so we'll know and those who choose not to keep logs won't know. Why should we get benefits just because we're willing to do tedious work that the computer can do for everyone?
The same argument applies to scoring. I keep a scoring log and update it every turn. This is tedious. Why not have the computer do it for us?
There's no way to prevent people from playing with full knowledge, open money and open scoring on a PBW site. Arguments in favor of secret information don't hold up against the fact that anyone can keep a log. |

Personally, I'd rather do a little basic maths myself and have the developers concentrate on bringing us new games. |

Great. I changed the calculation to make it easier. |
