I have spent the last few hours setting up some spam protection on the forum. It will take some time to work as well as I want it to, but its a big step in the right direction. There are now words that the forum does not like. If you submit a post that contains one of those words you will get a warning. If you are warned 3 times, you will be banned. The words in the list are not ones that should be used in the forum in normal day to day communication. I have tried to keep them very specific to the typical bot posts. I will be adding to the words as different bots show up. I have also set it so that users that have already posted a fair number of times (50 right now) are not affected by this filter. This should hopefully avoid any problems with accidental posts that contain the spam words.
I have also added in a frame work to add in more spam protection, so there will be other things rolling out. I hope to have these dumb spam bots all but eliminated by next weekend. Thanks for your patience. _________________ ---------------

Added a few words. Added a few other ways to detect spam. Like I said, its going to be an on going process. Spammers adapt, change words we'll just have to try to keep up with them. _________________ ---------------

Just a side note...those bayesian filters are actually MORE effective when legit email is marked as legit. In other words most people just think that marking email as spam is all that's required. But to train the database it needs to be taught good and bad just like a little baby. Not sure about this phpBB spam filter if you can train it for good posts, etc. but the concept is the same I'm sure. This also applies to email programs such as Mozilla Thunderbird which most people only choose 'Mark as Not Junk' only if it was classified as junk. However, you can mark your legit mails to help train it. I used to dabble in those corporate spam filters http://mrbass.org/barracuda |

I'm surprised that one got through, and unfortunately deleted it before looking for keywords to add to the blacklist.
There's fewer than 1 successful spam post a week, so thanks to RyanMC's efforts, it's much less of a problem. |
