|
|
"All players who have successful detectives advance their token the number of spaces based on their current position along the board. In the following example, red (being in first place) would advance one space, blue (in second place) would advance two spaces, green and yellow (both in third place) would advance three spaces, and purple (in fifth place) would advance five spaces if their detectives were successful."
This rule is wrong. The 3rd place is being tied by 2 players, but the 4th place is not skipped according to the original rules of Adel verpflichtet by alea. So purple would advance only 4 spaces in this case. |

In that example, fourth place is not "skipped". To be in fourth place, there can only be three people ahead of you; if there are four people ahead of you, you are in fifth place. This is the standard European interpretation and, with Hoity Toity being a European game, it seems highly unlikely that it would differ from it. Is there a specific example in the rulebook that supports your interpretation? |

I'll see your rules citation and raise you a rules clarification:
http://www.gamecabinet.com/ruleComments/AdelVerpflichtet.html
Text from link:
Quote: | This clarification comes from the games author, Klaus Teuber, via Alan Moon and is in direct contradiction of Avalon Hill's translation of the original German rules.
If a player is in last place, two other players' tokens share a square, and the last player succesfully plays a detective, that player's token advances five squares as the player in last place is, indeed, in fifth place. (The example in the Avalon Hill rules claims that the last place player would advance four spaces but Klaus says the A.H. folks blew it.)
If both of the players sharing a square succesfully played a detective they would both advance the same number of squares as they are considered to be tied for a position. |

And here is the text from Boardgamegeek:
3. Detective
The successful use of the detectives can also advance the tokens
around the board.
Detectives may only be played in the castle. All displayed detectives
catch all thieves, and put them in jail.
All players who have successful detectives advance their token the
number of spaces based on their current position on the board. The
detective cards are then returned to their hands.
Brown would advance one space, blue would advance two spaces, green
and beige would advance three spaces and lilac would advance five
spaces if their detectives were successful. [Note: this is a
correction from a mistake in the original German rules, which state
that lilac would only advance four spaces. See www.gamecabinet.com for
a confirmation from Klaus Teuber that lilac should advance five
spaces.] |

Another issue is would the thieves actually be released from prison just because the jail cells are full? Is this a correct system of punishment? What if one thief is stealing to supply food for his starving children, while another is just stealing to gain wealth? And for that matter, where is the black market for the items to be resold? I mean, what thief would keep the stolen item for himself? |
