Just curious (and without stating why).....in a face to face game do you prefer regular or auciton?
I prefer auction. |

I can't answer, because I've never played the auction version FtF. However, here on SBW, I do like playing the auction version better. |

It does take longer, but I don't mind. I usually have several games of Tikal going at once, so there is always something to do. And the auction improves the game enough to make the longer play time worthwhile, IMO. |

Auction, both here and F2F.
I only play regular Tikal with new players. |

Auction, both ftf and pbw. Random draw is simply too random.
Auction games on SBW take less time than many other games. I've had several Amun Re games take longer. |

I'm still very new to the game, but after learning and really enjoying the non-auction game, I'm finding the auction version of Tikal to be reeeeeally tedious and taking away from the fun of the game for me. I'm sure that's magnified with having to wait for everyone (and others waiting for me) on SBW, but still...
I like that there is at least some random element to the game with the tile draw, though even that seems minimal compared to many other games. Life is random in some ways, and no matter what you do, some factors of uncertainty will be there whether you are exploring Guatemalen jungles, building commodities on Catan, or collecting hoity toity art. Why not have the challenge of dealing with random elements as they come up, in combination with strategy and tactics? I think the best players will still win more often, despite any random elements, because their strategy and tactics will still prevail and they will be best at dealing with random situations as they come up.
I think the tile auction also detracts from the theme and the premise... If your expedition and some other expeditions are exploring an unknown jungle, you don't know what you're each going to find until you each go out and explore. One expedition exploring one way will find one thing, and another going another direction might find another. But regardless, you should have to deal with what you find and make the best of it.
Anyway, that's just my two cents... I think it's a great game, regardless, and I think I might enjoy bidding okay in a F2F game, but I don't think I'll be eager to play an auction game again on SBW after the game I'm currently playing.
Best,

VERY interesting (and true) observation! I never thought of it that way. Kudos for working the game's theme into your argument. |

I personally like games to have little chance element (enough to make interesting but not to hopelessly skew a game to one player). The auction achieves that. However, FtF most poeple I play want to have more luck in the game.
I'm all for the auction! |

I have played my fair share of Tikal. I also helped program it on here, and I think the "auction makes it less lucky" thought is way over exaggerated. Good players win in the non-auction version as well as the auction version. The difference isn't that much. When I first started playing Tikal I thought the auction was far superior. I don't hardly ever play it that way anymore, because it adds length, detracts from the streamlined play, adds ap, and doesn't add enough to the game to make it worth while.
Face to face I will play either way, online you couldn't convince me to play the auction version. _________________ ---------------
