I haven't put a lot of thought into it, but knowing how the SBW engine works, it could be VERY difficult to add in after the fact if not impossible. It's probably doable on new games, but it adds a very large level of complexity due to some of the requirements of the SBW engine. Color is used for a lot of things, and changing it could cause some chaos I think. I will see if we can add it in to new stuff we are working on, but I don't see if happening on old games. _________________ ---------------

I really don't understand how it can be so difficult. The engine could still use the original colors in the processing. Only the displayed colors in the game screen should change. And what is displayed should have absolutely no effect in the mechanics of the engine. |

Obviously you'd know better than we would.
I think it's doable, but it would require some overhaul of existing games. Depending on the game that overhaul could be easy or rather extensive. |

I would like to add that I did this on my site because I saw the idea suggested in this forum, and it was a revelation to me. I had always assumed that players colors were obviously 'fixed', but once I saw the concept, it was such a logical thing to do! And I agree with Gladitus, the point is certainly not playing with your preferred color: I couldn't care less about my color, as long as it's the same in all my games. |
Mabi, can you let us know (when you have enough experience with it to say) how this has turned out? Has there been any confusion? Do your users like it? Have you received any complaints?

I don't think there is any kind of problem or source of confusion coming from this feature. As someone pointed out, if colors are not fixed anymore people just use names instead of colors to refer to other players, so I really wouldn't worry about this.
But I must add that I have the impression that this fetaure is not widely used, or at least less than I expected. On MaBiWeb players can customize colors in their running games and they can also set their color preferences (so in every new game they will automatically get their preferred color combination). I can't say how many players use the first option, customizing a single game, but looking in the DB I see that so far only 79 users have set their color preferences. So if implementing the faeture is a lot of work maybe it's not worthwile (well, it was worthwile for me because personally I find it very useful ).
Anyway, welcome back Mikael!
I'm really glad to see you back in action, and I see no need to give Myke and Ryan some rest, keep them working! . |
