I will be taking sign ups for a new 4 player tourney shortly.
I thought I would ask whether there are any changes to the format that I should consider before starting the next one? |

count me in, now that the rust have fallen off on the games I don't play much on sbw...
one suggestion would be to use the Auction variant for Tikal. That would eliminate the luck of the draw on the treasure and scoring tiles. |

Is it a once around auction? Otherwise it may really extend the game. |

Nope, not once around and it really does slow down the game. It's fine in person but the games here drag on and on (to the point that I don't play that variant anymore). Suffice it to say, I'm not a fan of the auction version of Tikal.
Edited to note that the auction really does nothing to ameliorate the treasure tile luck as the luck of who gets matching sets and who doesn't has a much bigger influence on the outcome of the game than does the luck of who happens to draw the treasure tiles. In my opinion, of course. |

I'm with Sue on this one, having played here, it really is a drag, games can last 4 times longer |

From my experience it does extend the game length significantly, and I suspect too much to use it here - but I will try to work out how it stacks up against Santiago which seems to be the longest game.
Imho, it doesn't seem to affect the luck of the draw that much, it just moves it around. It does add something to the game, but probably not enough for the extra time spent, which could be used to play more normal games. |

Well, if you have a nice camp location, then pulling a wonderful temple can easily be worth 10-15 during the game. If you pull an empty tile and someone blocks your camp, you lose those points. And in games with good players 10-15 is a LOT. |

I agree with Tikal going on too long with the auction variant. Santiago may go on longer but at least you don't feel like you are playing the same turn many times in a row.
Count me in for another tourney. |

I agree with Gaditus. The luck just shifts from tile draw (which can be mitigated by smart worker placement and placement of other tiles) to seating order (which there's nothing you can do about). I'd argue that a camp that can be rendered ineffective by one round of poor tile draw wasn't necessarily that well-placed in the first place. (i.e. I'd call it a gamble that didn't pay off.) After all, *somebody's* going to draw the nice tiles and they're not going to waste them blocking your camp. Personally, I like tile placement games a lot better than auction games - so I prefer the tile placement version of Tikal to the auction version. IMO, the auction element overwhelms the rest of the game and makes it not fun anymore. YMMV.
As long as we think we'll be done by midJune (when I'll be AFK for ~2 weeks), I'm interested in playing. Maybe one of these years, I'll even figure out a functional strategy for Wallenstein! |
