This idea that an automated system (even if its simply a REPORTING system that enforces nothing) will either discriminate against players or lead to lead to only fast games is quite simply ridiculous.
For one, there are a bunch of people on this thread who have stated they don't necessarily want to play really fast games ergo not every game will be fast.
As far as only fast games go, I know I've joined games with no comments knowing nothing about the people who are currently in it. The idea that everyone will switch to fast only if such a system were about is nothing short of preposterous. The fact is I don't want to play with a self-selecting smaller and smaller group of people. I want to play with a variety of people and the only way to do so is to play with people you don't know at least some of the time (to widen the circle).
I have in the past argued that an invitation option will fix a lot of these problems. Part of my motivation for such a suggestion was simply to avoid playing 12 games at the same time with the same people (I think i've had 6-8 games that have had the same player before). That's not to say that those players are bad or you never want to play with them. The fundamental principle is of choice and variety.
Why people are so opposed to some people being better able to play some games in a different manner to what they do now is totally beyond me. |

I don't think the issue is anyone opposes fast play. We just recognize why this site was created - to be a play-by-email gaming community. Life comes at all of us in different ways and every once in a while we have real events that prevent quick play even if we intend otherwise.
My suggestion is shoot someone a PM and ask them to join a game. I do this all the time with people I enjoy playing with. I'd offer to play either of you, but December is not a good month for me.
And another thing...the beauty of playing in a slower paced game (for you speedsters like me) is you get to meet new people. |

I really don't see this as much of a problem. I haven't played nearly as many games as stargate has, for instance, but only a tiny percentage of my games have been painfully slow.
If this is really important to you, set up your own set of passworded games. Find a list of players that you like to play with, or just go through the list of players with quick turnaround times, and send them all a personal message saying something to the effect of "i'll be creating games named 'jimbo's games' with the password of 'slowplyrssuck' so feel free to join in." It worked for CrazyYog. |

the CrazyYog games were never about slow players
the main purpose of the GrazyYog games was to avoid abandoned games |

Okay, so it's not a perfectly apt analogy, but I think it's similar enough that it's a good model for solving this "problem." |

I honestly believe there is a lot of merit to both sides of this argument. Which makes developing a good solution that much more difficult -- doing it in a way that will please everyone involved.
I do also want to improve this site. It is my child, and I do want to see it improve and develop. There are dozens, possibly hundreds of good suggestions that have been made and I would like to implement all of them. And yes, taking on additional volunteer developers would help address that, but doing even that will take a significant amount of effort to manage. I know this from experience -- bringing Ryan and Myke onboard has resulted in the addition of two excellent games, and they really saved me in terms of stepping up and taking over much of the daily administration and bug fixing over the past year, but it did take a lot of time supporting them in getting acquainted with how everything works, and was also a big risk (fortunately neither of them have wiped out the database, at least not yet).
I'm closing this and a few other threads that have passed the point of meaningful discussion for the time being, so that (a) I can catch up and (b) folks can calm down a little bit. I do ask that you all keep civil and respectful in your posts, and please try to remember that you aren't always going to be able to convince those with opposing views that you are right. |
