A few kind users have emailed me asking if they could send me a few dollars/euros/etc. to help pay for the site, which was very nice of them to offer.
Well, for a little while (after seeing them on BoardGameGeek), I was thinking about looking into Google ads. But then I remembered that I don't really believe in advertising, so why would I put it on my site.
Maybe the day will come that I'll ask for donations to help pay for the site -- perhaps if it gets really popular so that bandwidth costs become a concern. But the server space doesn't cost very much at all right now, so I'm not going to. For now, it's my gift to the gaming community.
I will, however, graciously accept tips of GeekGold on BoardGameGeek so that I can afford that GeekBadge I've been longing for... |

I would gladly tip you a couple of geek gold....I only have 12, I'm also saving for a badge, but this site is worth some gold. What is your user name on BGG? Never tipped gold before, so I don't really know how. But let me know and I'm on it.

Well, I just got the GeekBadge yesterday (thanks to the generosity of several users, who I still owe thank you's to). So since you're just starting on the long path to GeekGold riches, please don't send me any (but thanks for thought)! |

Set up a paypal account and I'm sure some of us would donate. |

Geekgold is a virtual currency used on www.boardgamegeek.com. Geekgold is awarded for contributing to the site in the form of gaming articles, images and session reports. By saving up gold you can purchase an avatar and a badge. There are even auctions where strange people actually sell real games for the stuff.
But don't try to use it down the shops. _________________ It's not the winning, it's utter annihilation of your opponant that matters. |

We've only contributed $400 so far and projected needs are projected at $1,050. It seems donations have stalled the past week. I know I can pitch in a little more in about a month or perhaps a lot more if more people don't step forward and pitch in $10 or $20 here and there. I betcha there's a certain amount of donations once met (ultra top secret) and once it's hit Santiago and Hacienda will be released*.
*pure speculation on my part but whatever motivates one to contribute whether it be true or false so be it. |

Heh, no, I'm not nearly devious enough to do that. Honestly, donations have no effect on how much time I spend on the site, and definitely no effect on Ryan and Myke's work on Hacienda. I decided to start accepting donations only because I could see myself cheaping out on server hosting in the future if I didn't.
One thing to say -- if you can't afford to contribute, please don't, and don't feel bad about it either. The site's future doesn't depend on donations.
(This has to be the worst pledge drive ever -- I'll never get a job with PBS...) |

$486.45 has been contributed by 17 users thus far as of Aug 5, 2006.
an average donation of $28.61
Or look at it this way. If every user (3,250) on average is hypothetically donating $0.15 which gives $486.45
Now still needs $1,200 - $486.45 = $713.55
Need everyone who hasn't yet donated (3,250 - 17 = 3,233) to donate $0.22 please.
So everyone donate a quarter and think of it like playing at the ol' video arcade game. For those who aren't in-the-know a "quarter" is $0.25. |

I didn't even notice donations were being accepted until just today! When I 1st started using the site I had seen the note that donations were not being accepted. I just made a donation.
How about setting it up so it's a little more obvious that donations are being accepted? |

make the "Donate" link RED
red is used to highlight your turn ---
how many users miss their turn ? -- not many
red is used to highlight the fact that a deadbeat has not taken a turn
(I do not mean to offend users on vacation)
do we notice when we have a game with a deadbeat ? -- we all do
red would also be a good color for the "Back?" link

ok the rankings bug was fixed today -- so we all know how many
games each user have played with all the correct stats
here is a stat --- the top 50 users by total Wins --
have completed 15,570 games
donations to SBW have been $ 847.77 (made by 35 people)
this works out to be $ 0.0674 per game
where else can you play a game for under seven cents ?
how many of you have spent over $500.00 for the Xbox-360 plus games
and not a penny for any of the 200 games you have played on SBW ?
which has given you more fun for the money spent ? |
