I remember back when I was a kid, I thought Michael Phelps’ medal haul was something nobody could ever touch. My dad used to replay those Olympic races on the old DVR, and we’d just sit there stunned. The same goes for some of those insane football scoring records — I was convinced they were locked in stone. Curious what you guys thought — which sports record made you go “nah, no way anyone’s topping that” until someone actually did?

I’ve always been fascinated by how people remember where they were when a big milestone happens. Like hearing friends say, “I was at the bar when that shot went in” or “I was on a long flight when I saw the headline.” Those little personal markers almost become part of the history itself, and they stick with you as much as the actual record. It’s wild how sports moments anchor themselves in everyday life like that.

For me it has to be Ronaldo’s goal tally. I used to argue with friends that nobody would keep scoring at that pace past 35, yet here he is, still rewriting history. I stumbled across this piece the other day of sport https://www.ronaldo7.net/news/2025/08/2401-goals-ronaldo-has-broken-and-remaining-records.html and honestly, I had to double-check the numbers. What gets me is how he’s not just breaking records, but completely resetting the bar for future generations. Makes me wonder if kids growing up now will ever view “impossible” stats the same way we did.
