Some games announce themselves with trailers, hype, and countdowns. Others? They just appear—like a doodle on Google’s homepage one morning—and somehow take over your whole day. That’s exactly what happened to me with baseball.

I wasn’t planning on playing a game that day. I had emails to write, chores to finish, deadlines looming. But then I clicked on the doodle, saw a peanut winding up on the pitcher’s mound, and thought, “Well… maybe just one swing.” Famous last words.
