Neither has ahauwi1... I'm not sure why somebody would join a tournament if they knew they were about to leave on a long vacation.

ahauwi1 has set his "away flag" to 23rd Feb. I can't see that's a big problem. Play some other games while you're waiting.

Both Beast and ahauwi1 are 'away' for a week or two. However both are generally reasonably quick players and I would expect the games they are in to be finished within the 3 month timescale originally requested. I am assuming that there are no other longish breaks by other players in their leagues of course.

It is difficult to get the balance correct between players who wish to play quickly and those who play a little more slowly or have holidays without internet access. Too strict an approach may restrict the number of players and too lax makes it less enjoyable for many.

I am monitoring the position and am happy to listen to constructive comments in the meantime.

I'll also be away - I thought these games would be finishing by now I'm leaving Feb. 25 and returning March 23 with no computer access. Sorry about the delay. I'll think about you on my holidays.

Rolling Eyes never fear, I have enough to keep me occupied.

I actually only get annoyed in two situations:

1) Somebody signs on to a expressly "fast" game, and then plays slowly.
2) Somebody signs on to a game, and then immediately (or almost immediately) goes on a prolonged vacation.

To me, joining a tournament and then immediately going on a long vacation hits me as the second situation. I know, I know, if this bothers me I should just sign up for 150 games so I won't be able to keep track of any them and then I'll be happy... but that won't make me happy.

I play in many slow games, and I don't complain about slow players in any of them. I have a bus game that has been dragging for a very long time, no complaints. Ditto for an AmunRe (non-tourney) game. Neither game was marketed as being fast, so I have no cause for complaint.

Total weird analogy... since it happened to me over the weekend.

I was playing squash, and some guy asked if I wanted to play. I agreed, we are 5 minutes in, and then he tells me that he'll be back in 20 minutes, he has to go pick up his son.

Shocked

To me, joining a game of Amun re and leaving on vacation immediately is equivalent.

my 2 cents

League is not a tournament.
Sign in a tournament and leave in vacations immediately is not fair.
In case of a League, this is different as players want to participate to ALL seasons.

The best is to give a deadline from the begining for the tournament/League season, and eventually punish whose who are too slow at the end.

I agree with toutoune. Leagues are long-term commitments; anyone might have a vacation during that extended period. As long as they make every effort to complete by the deadline, I have no problem.

If the trip is extended, it should be mentioned up front (in case anyone else has similar problems -- if each person is out a different week, you're in trouble!) I remember Adriaan noting he would be gone for a month, and expected to be able to make up the time.

For tourneys, though, yes, it's annoying when someone starts and then scampers off. Real-time games as well. (I've been guilty of that myself; I got better, at least as long as my connection doesn't bug out on me.)

Adriaan did mention this but only in connection with the three player league. I have asked him to sit the next 3 player season out as 4 out of the 6 weeks is obviously too much.

I have not decided how to deal with it in this league yet, but I think 4 weeks is probably too long a break to be acceptable.

I do think leagues are different to tournaments but I will try to think of a fair way to let someone miss one season without going all the way down to the bottom division.

Well, since you asked the players in Adriaan's division for their opinion, I'll just chime in and say that I don't really have an opinion either way.

If you as "tournament director" decide you want to finish the league before he returns, I suppose 4-player games for the remaining players are the fairest option.

I have no problem with whatever you decide! I'll abide with whatever decision is made.

I would prefer that the tournament proceed without the vacationer.

I would also prefer that tournament proceed without vacationer. As far as making a decision on who wins or restarting, I'm leading in points, money and already have prime province/temples in the new kingdom so my opinion might be a bit biased Wink ...... but I'll go along with whatever you decide as long as we can continue.

-thanks
