Variant I just made up (totally cannot be done on SBW, but in real life).

Each turn, players get "power points" equal to the number of power card symbols they have (in total, power card symbols in bonus things you get for one turn only). (Optional, points could be double symbols, or symbols squared to really make Mendes even crappier than it already is)

Then X cards are laid out, where X=#players*2, face up.

Bidding is done using power points, in a once around no repeat fashion. Winner gets first pick, and only winner pays. Power points not used by the end of the turn are gone. Player starting the bidding rotates for each card, so each person will start the bidding (and be in the least advantageous position) twice.

If nobody bids on a card, it is discarded.

Due to the utter suckage of the "overbid in same province card", this variant would probably have to include my other variant:

Overbid variant: Overbid same province lets you make the SAME bid as somebody else, knocking their bidding chip off the board. This can be in the same province or a different province. This can only be done once per auction phase, card does not carry over to other bidding should you get overbid. (Makes the card ridiculously powerful, but with an auction format, people would have to pay for it)

This would be less insanely powerful if it only worked in the same province as one you've already bid on. I just posted the same card (basically) on BGG in the Amun-Re variant forum. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/3594369#3594369
