The figure in brackets is player's overall score. I have added 500 to everyone's score, mainly to make the tables line up, but also so no one has a negative total! It makes no difference to the ranking order.

These scores are provisional as there is a an outstanding from season three which may effect initial points for a couple of players (although clearly not starting divisions). 4 players, in colour in the tables have had their points adjusted to allow for games that completed (in divison 8 last season), after the divisions for this season were finalised.

The colours will indicate provisional promotions/relegations (assuming everyone continues and no new entrants) for season five.

The colours give an indication of promotion/relegation for next season.

If all players rejoin and there are no leavers then

dark red - promotion by 2 or more divisions
red - promotion by 1 division
black - no change
blue - relegation by 1 division
dark blue - relegation by 2 or more.

In practice players leaving/joining, results to come in other divisions will change things, but it should give a good idea.

Promotion/relegation now depends on points scored for finishing 1st, 2nd etc in games (rather than, as previously, where you finished in the divisional table).

HighwayStar scored -16 this time (1 X 20 + 1 x -4 + 1 x -8 + 2 x -12).
Coyotek4 scored 0 (3 x 4 + 1 x -4 + 1 x -8).

Highway's 1 win put him higher in the division, but wasn't enough to outweigh the negative points for last place in overall scoring.

No scoring system is perfect, but the new method does mean players can sit out the odd season and then come back without having to start right at the bottom.

Back in the days, I used to play Diplomacy, and there was a big argument over how to score games. Some people (like myself) felt that you either won the entire thing by yourself or you lost. Others liked to assign partial points to "3-way draws" or "survival on the board when somebody else won".

Assigning points for 2nd place strikes me as detracting from the point of the game. Either you win, or you lose. Imagine you have two choices of action to take, that will result in the following at the given probabilities:

Action A

Win: 2%
2nd: 3%
3rd: 5%
4th: 40%
5th: 50%



Action B

Win: zero
2nd: 70%
3rd: 25%
4th 4%
5th: 1%


I would hope that everyone would take action "A", since the point of the game is to win. Under the current scoring system though, it might be reasonable to take action B.

Of course, this just affects the division placings for the following season, not the actual division winner, so perhaps it is not all that much of an issue. This will make for a lot more "churn", which may or may not be a good thing.
