Hi everybody!

This is for all of you who are interested in joining a Reef Encounter league.

Since it seems the old league died, I'm thinking of starting a new one. I'm not sure what format it should be, so I'll suggest a couple of alternatives, and hear from those of you who'd like to join, what alternative you want. Formats I've thunk of:

Alterantive 1a: Long and hard

5 players in each league
"Round Robin" for 2, 3 and 4-player games,
that means 14 games each(four 2-player, six 3-player and four 4-player).
Points are gained for the different positions players finish in in the individual games. A 4-player game win will be rewarded the most, a 2-player game the least.

Downside to this format is that you'll play the same players A LOT!

Alterantive 1b: Long, hard and a lot of paper work

Just as Alternative 1, only that there will be seperate tables for 2, 3 and 4-player games. You will then gain points for yor final position in each table. All tables give an equal amount of points. There will probably be tie-breaking issues here, but I don't want to think about that now...Shocked

Alternative 2a: Short and sweet

5 players in each league
Five 4-player games in total, 4 for each player.
Only wins count!
If(that is when) two or more players have an equal amount of wins and the league positions involved are "relevant" for promotion(first place) or relegation(last place), there will be a "playoff" game. These will be 2- or 3-player games. In the unlikely event that everybody has one win each, second places count instead, followed by playoff matches, and so on.

Alternative 2b: Short, sweet and easy

A problem with alternative 2a might be, that after a couple of games have finished, players might, for tactical reasons, play only to stop certain players from winning instead of doing "their best". For those of you that think thats lame, alternative 2b might be better:

Instead of playoff games, ties in wins are decided with amount of second places, then third places. If there is still a tie, the player with the "least points lost by" in total wins. (Similar to the old league)

Alternative 3: Ladder-like fun

4 players in each league
Ther will be two 4-player games. Only wins count!
Those with an equal amount of wins then play each other to decide their positions. That means, "playoffs" will be either one 3-player game to decide relegation, or two 2-player games deciding both promotion and relegation.

Alternative 4: What do you want?

If you have an idea, and more of you like this better than the ones mentioned above, I might just use that instead!

Alternative 4a: 2-player games

Suggested by freduk(see post).

With this format, 4, 5 or 6 player leagues would all work well, without it getting to many games for each player.

For all alternatives
Before an eventual first season, there will be some kind of qualification scheme. This will be "seeded", in that players with a lower win percentage will get a more difficult draw.

So, what I want to know is:
Do you want to join?
What alternatives would you accept/prefer?
Do you want to suggest an alternative format?
Do you have any questions?
Whatever...

For this to have any meaning starting up, I'm thinking 15 players is a minimum, maybe 12 for the ladder-like format.

Make yourself at home!

If I was running a Reef tournament (and I'm not, so take this any way you like Very Happy ), I would have divisions of (say) 5 players, with each one playing each other person once in a 2-player format.
The leagues would move fairly quickly, and you eliminate the tactical kingmaking problem of multi-player games.
Each division is decided by win-loss with a natural "goal difference" for tied places.
That's what I would do. (but I don't have the time). It's simple and quick and you also don't have to worry about 2nd, 3rd, 4th places in each game. You either win or lose.

Whichever way you end up doing it, please count me in.

If people prefer two-player games, this would be a very good solution. I've added it to the list!

I'm up for any Reef League Very Happy

But probably would prefer the 2 player league, as suggested by FredUK...

I'll play in whatever format you choose, but I prefer a format where the crazies can't metagame by focusing on "don't let him win this game so i win the league."

Well, the amount of interest this thread generated was somewhat disappointing. For those of you who showed interest, thanks, but it appears that this league is stillborn.

Me too. I would def be interested - prob prefer a ladder format.

It would maybe be better, and get more interest, if you just choose a format (whatever is easiest and most interesting for you), and let people join that.

Oooh, I came in late also (I've pretty much stoppped checking the forums after the last RE league ended up stopping mid-stride).

You can count me in for whatever 3 or 4 player format you devise - but I'm really not very interested in 2 player.

And as has been mentioned above, I think the goal-difference, or number of 2nd placings would probably be a better way to go when it comes to breaking ties.

Ah, more players interested! I think I'll follow lindalait's advice, and choose a format, and post as a new topic(soon). The one preference which seems to be agreed upon is that no metagame tactics are desirable. That rules out all alternatives but freduk's two-player league and the "ladder-like" format. As sedge, I think two player games are less interesting, so I'll choose the ladder format(though there may be one 2-player game as a tiebreaker). It also takes less players to get obtain 3 "tables". Players considered in (if this league is realised) are:
me, freduk, worcesterarlo, gische
Players "interested"(confirmation needed):
dawnuk, lindalait and sedge(one of 3 games may be a 2-player game)

I'll join if it is only one game at the time. I don't like playing multiple, simultaneous reef games.

There will be two games that run simultaneously, and the one "playoff" game at last.

If it's only a couple of games at a time, I'll join. I definitely prefer methods that don't just count wins as metagame tactics would drive me mad (and drive me off).
