Happy New Year everyone!
I'm excited to get the Tikal 2013 Winter Olympics tournament underway today, the first day of the new year In this post I'll outline the tournament structure and rules. My next post will set the opening round match ups.
The Winter Olympics is divided into 2 stages, Qualifying Rounds and Playoffs. The Qualifying Stage determines who will compete in the Playoff Stage. The tournament starting field consists of 8 players. The top 4 point earners from the Qualifying Rounds will move on to the Playoffs.
All games are AUCTION format. During the Qualifying Stage each player will play one 2-player game (ROUND 1), three 3-player games simultaneously (ROUND 2) and two 4-player games simultaneously (ROUND 3), 6 games per player in all.
Qualifying Stage point structure:
ROUND 1 1st = 5 points 2nd = 1 point
ROUND 2 1st = 5 points 2nd = 3 points 3rd = 1 point
ROUND 3 1st = 5 points 2nd = 3 points 3rd = 2 points 4th = 1 point
Because we will not be able to play every possible combination, match ups will be based on a seeding system. I'll let you know how the players are seeded when I set the match ups for each round.
Qualifying Stage seeding structure:
ROUND 1 (1 game per player)
1 - 8
2 - 7
3 - 6
4 - 5
ROUND 2 (3 games per player)
1 - 3 - 7
1 - 4 - 6
1 - 5 - 8
2 - 4 - 7
2 - 3 - 6
2 - 5 - 8
3 - 7 - 8
4 - 5 - 6
ROUND 4 (2 games per player)
1 - 3 - 5 - 8
1 - 4 - 6 - 7
2 - 4 - 5 - 8
2 - 3 - 6 - 7
Total SBW Tikal wins determine ROUND 1 seedings. If a lower seed beats a higher seed in ROUND 1, that player takes over the higher seed position and his/her opponent takes over the lower seed position for ROUND 2. Total tournament points after ROUND 2 determine ROUND 3 seedings.
The highest 4 point totals after 3 Qualifying Rounds determine who moves on to the Playoffs.
Playoff games structure:
QUARTER-FINALS one 4 player game eliminates 4th place, top 3 Victory Point totals move on to SEMI-FINALS
SEMI-FINALS one 3 player game eliminates 3rd place, top 2 Victory Point totals move on to FINALS
FINALS one 2 player CHAMPIONSHIP game
During the Qualifying Stage the goal is to pile up as many tournament points as possible. During the Playoff Stage the goal is simply to not finish last
Please check my next post for ROUND 1 match ups.
OK, any questions? _________________ thanks for reading this far, JokeToy |

Nice format JT. All we need now is for the players to tune in and set up the 1st round. Let the games begin! Good strategies to all. And Happy New Year - 2013. |

Thanks, Hammer. This one is different and hopefully will be fun
A small mistake in the description above ~ where it says "ROUND 4 (2 games per player)" it should say "ROUND 3 (2 games per player)".
Also in case there is a tie in tournament points for seeding going into ROUND 3 or for determining who makes the playoffs, total Tikal Victory Points in all prior games will be the tie-breaker. _________________ thanks for reading this far, JokeToy |

One more rule clarification. If 2 (or more) players tie in Victory Points in any game, all the tournament points involved are split evenly. This can result in fractional tournament points.
Example 1: X and Y tie in a 2-player game (6 total points for 1st and 2nd), both X and Y get 3 tournament points. Example 2: X and Y and Z all tie in a 3-player game (9 total points for 1st, 2nd and 3rd), X and Y and Z each get 3 tournament points. Example 3: X and Y tie for 2nd in a 4-player game (5 total points for 2nd and 3rd), both X and Y get 2.5 tournament points.
OK, let's keep the tie scores to a minimum _________________ thanks for reading this far, JokeToy |

Good suggestion about speed of play I'll reply to this more fully on the topic thread where I talk about the new tournament (this topic thread is about a tournament that happened 2 years ago). _________________ thanks for reading this far, JokeToy |
