I have never started up a private game and am having a hell of a time trying to set it up without my password showing up in the games list.
Could someone please help me, now that everyone knows my private password.

It only shows the password to you. That password is a password for the game. You pick one at random, tell it to your friends, then they can join. It always shows you the pass in case you forget it.
