We’ve covered the best starter kits, as well as the best advanced kits so it was about time we covered tanks too. Once you get into more advanced vaping with a variable wattage mod, you’re open to a whole world of options in regards to tanks. While your mod and its output are important, the tank is where the real vaping magic happens. Choosing a vape tank allows you to refine how much vapour you want to be producing, look at more coil options, focus on flavour as well as control how much wattage you need to fire through.

We’ll cover some of the recent releases we think are worth looking at, as well as some classic tanks that are still worth as much consideration now as they were when they first came out. All these tanks have the standard 510 connector so will fit on your mod with the corresponding threading.

Whether you're new to vaping, are primarily interested in cloud-chasing, or are looking for a top-of-the-range tank or clearomizer, we're confident you'll find something that meets your needs within our list of the best vape tanks currently available in our store.

There are many factors you need to consider when buying a vape tank or clearomiser. Factors that will determine what the best vape tank is for your needs will include your level of experience, your budget, whether you're interested in or have the experience for sub-ohm vaping, your cloud production requirements, your preferred level of flavour and your preferences in terms of style, size and design. Whether you require something designed for mobile use, a pocket-sized solution or something more bulky and powerful, options are available.

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE BEST TANK FOR ME?
The best way to answer this question is pretty simple. Start by looking at your e-liquid. Certain e-liquids will only work properly in certain tanks due to how thick they are as well as how much nicotine they contain. If you’re using something like a nic salt or 50:50 e-liquid, you’ll want a mouth to lung tank. If you’re using something with a lower nicotine level and a higher VG content (read as: 60% VG or more) you’ll want a Sub Ohm tank.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MOUTH TO LUNG AND SUB OHM?
The key difference here is the inhalation style you’re using to vape with which in turn is dictated largely by your coil resistance. Mouth to lung tanks will have coil options that are 1.0ohm in resistance or more while Sub Ohm tanks will be (you guessed it) less than 1.0ohm. The lower the resistance, the more power can flow through the coil which in turn leads to more vapour and a less restricted inhale. Essentially, mouth to lung tanks need less wattage to fire while Sub Ohm tanks need to be paired with more powerful mods in order to get enough wattage to vaporise your e-liquid.

MOUTH TO LUNG TANK DESIGN
When you’re using a mouth to lung tank, you’ll be employing the same inhalation style as you would with a conventional cigarette. That is, drawing some vapour into your mouth, then inhaling down into your lungs. These tanks are typically the most popular amongst newer vapers looking for something that feels familiar, can handle a high nicotine level and give more of a throat hit feeling.

As far as design goes, starting from the top down, they’ll usually have a more narrow drip tip (the part you put in your mouth to inhale from). This serves to restrict the inhale further as well as enhancing flavour. At the base of the tank, you might also find adjustable airflow too. Turning the airflow one way or the other will either close down the vents or open them up, giving you more control over how tight a draw you can get. Mouth to lung tanks are typically less cloudy than Sub Ohm tanks, making them a more discreet option for when you’re out and about. They also tend to use less e-liquid so you won’t need to refill as often either.

SUB OHM TANK DESIGN
Sub Ohm vaping is also often referred to as direct to lung vaping. That means when you inhale, rather than letting the vapour sit in your mouth for a moment, you inhale more deeply straight into your lungs. It’s a much looser inhale and produces a significant amount more vapour - partly due to your lower resistance coil and partly due to more power being required to heat the coil. They’re often more flavourful as well as more cloudy while also offering a very mild throat hit.

Sub Ohm tanks will only ever be sold in a 2ml capacity at most, but some may also come with an expander glass to increase the amount of e-liquid they can hold. Due to the fact they create more heat and vapour, they also chug through e-liquid much more quickly too. Bigger tanks mean less refills, which is always a bonus. Their drip tips will typically be wider (510 or 810 are very common) to allow more air flow. The adjustable airflow at the base of the tank will also offer significantly more ventilation to allow for a deeper inhale.

Bearing all of that in mind, here are our top 10 tank picks from 2020 ranging from mouth to lung, to Sub Ohm as well as a few that can do both:

BEST VAPE TANKS FOR 2020
Aspire - Nautilus GT
Geek Vape - Alpha
Horizon - Falcon II
Aspire - Cleito
Aspire - Odan
Innokin - Ajax
Aspire - Nautilus XS
Innokin - Zlide
Vaporesso - VM 22
Aspire - Tigon
SUB OHM TANKS
1 - ASPIRE NAUTILUS GT
A tank with very big boots to fill but certainly lives up to task, we have been hugely impressed with the new Nautilus GT tank. Aspire have designed this one in collaboration with Taifun, and is a great option for both mouth to lung and sub-ohm vapers. Compatible with the original Nautilus BVC coils, as well as the new 0.7 Nautilus 2S mesh coil. The tank itself has an outstanding look for sure, but the best improvement to the original has to be the airflow which give the Nautilus coils a new lease of life. Aspire have also redesigned the base of the tank for better heat dissipation to maximise flavour. In addition, the Nautilus GT chimney is made from the same heat resistant material as the drip tip to minimise heat retention and condensation.

The Nautilus GT is a 2ml capacity tank, and is top filled. To do so is very easy, simply remove the top cap by twisting anti-clockwise until the dots align and lift away. An extremely versatile tank, the additions to the GT make day to day vaping easier and is why we would recommend the tank for beginners and seasoned vapers alike. Truly delivering on style, ease of use and on both cloud and flavour.

2 - GEEK VAPE ALPHA
Like anything with Geek Vape, one of the first things you’ll notice about the Alpha tank is it looks incredible. If you’re looking for a tank that stands out and has plenty of colour options, this one is worth considering. It’s on the larger side as far as diameter goes with a 25mm base, so is better suited for larger mods to avoid any overhang. It’s also best suited to mods with more power - the coils were made for some serious cloud action so you’ll want something that can push through 100 watts or more.

Aside from a swivel top fill port, wide bore drip tip for more vapour and large vents with adjustable airflow, the coils also contribute to super vapour in the Alpha. The two coils you get with the tank are mesh kanthal options, great for flavour and dense clouds. Your first choice is the single core X1 coil with a 0.2ohm resistance for 60 to a hefty 110 watts. If you’d prefer something a little more mild, your other choice is the 0.4ohm dual coil for 50 to 80 watts.

3 - HORIZON FALCON II
A tank that any sub-ohm vaper should be proud of sitting on their mod, the Falcon 2 tank brushes a lot of sub-ohm tanks away. A beautiful looking tank, the Falcon 2 is the successor to the original tank which is difficult to improve on, but Horizon have done just that. Whilst the design is generally the same, the main design change is the stylish cage surrounding the coil. Initial thoughts was that this was just to make it look stylish, but infact the surrounding blades helps the e-liquid travel into the cotton faster.

The main improvement, design aside, is the new ‘Sector mesh’ coils which are a push-in, pull-out system. At the time of writing, there is only one resistance available (note the previous coils do not fit!) which are a 0.16 resistance in mesh. The sector mesh coils are a conical shape, which create an upside down funnel to help concentrate the vapour into a smaller area as it reaches the mouthpiece, in turn giving better flavour. In terms of filling, the Falcon 2 is a swivel top-fill design. Thankfully, unlike other swivel tanks, a fair amount of pressure is required to open so unlikely to pop open when your device is in your pocket. The Falcon 2 is an extremely impressive sub-ohm tank, and you’re unlikely to find a tank that delivers crisper flavour than this.

4 - ASPIRE CLEITO
The original Aspire Cleito has been around for a while now, but its popularity has sustained itself over the years for a reason. Many a vaper started out with a Cleito and often go back to it for a slim and efficient option. If you’re looking into your first tank, the Cleito is a strong contender given how versatile it is. It’s narrow enough at 22mm in diameter to fit on even the more narrow mods with no overhang.

The other benefit of the Cleito is of course the coil options. If you have a mod with a slightly lower maximum wattage output (in the realm of 80 watts at most) the Cleito is ideal. You’ve got three coils to choose from, the first is a 0.2ohm for 55 - 70 watts and more vapour. The second choice is a 0.4ohm (which will give you a little more flavour, less vapour) that can be vaped between 40 and 60 watts. Finally, there’s a stainless steel equivalent also in a 0.4ohm resistance which you can use in temperature control mode too.

5 - ASPIRE ODAN
The Odan is pretty different from the usual offerings from Aspire in all the best ways. It’s stunning to look at, from the resin cobra pattern 810 drip tip up the top to the ridged adjustable airflow vent at the base. Not to mention the diamond cut glass bulb you can get that’ll increase your capacity from a standard 2ml up to a 5ml capacity. It’s much more hefty in size than Aspire’s usual tanks too. Measuring in at 27mm at the base, it’s an ideal Sub Ohm option for those of you with larger mods. As far as usability goes, Aspire have ticked all the boxes there too. It’s incredibly leak proof for a start, thanks to the lift and push top fill design. Just gently pull the top of the tank up and slide it back to expose the fill port.

When it comes to coil options and changing the coils themselves, that’s super simple too. Once you’ve removed your tank from your mod, just unscrew the base of the Odan and pull the old coil out before clicking a fresh one into place. The Odan coils come in either a 0.2ohm or 0.3ohm option - perfect for getting plenty of flavour and vapour. No need to wait until the tank is empty before you swap coils either - the Odan is self-sealing meaning that your e-liquid is locked inside when you pull the old coil out.

6 - INNOKIN AJAX
If a more minimalist and sleek look is your thing, the Ajax tank from Innokin might be up your street. Coming in three colours, your choice of either black, silver or blue, there’s an option that’ll look great sitting on top of any mod. The Ajax comes complete with a cobra pattern drip tip that matches the marbled pattern on the tank making for a subtle but striking appearance. It measures in at 24mm in diameter, meaning it’ll fit most mods with no overhang too. Refilling is a breeze as well as mess free thanks to the classic sliding top fill design. At the base of the tank you’ll also find dual adjustable airflow. Close it down for a warmer and more intensely flavourful vape or leave it wide open for plenty of vapour and a cooler inhale.

Inside the thank, Innokin have used their PLEX3D technology in the Ajax coils too. These coils are constructed from Kanthal - giving you exceptional flavour, super amounts of vapour as well as a quick heating up and cooling down. They really last the distance and come in two resistance options, 0.16ohms for the cloud chasers and 0.35ohms for those who want a little more emphasis on flavour.

7 - ASPIRE NAUTILUS XS
Another tank on our list from Aspire, and another from the popular Nautilus range. Aspire’s Nautilus XS tank is the improved and updated version of the Nautilus X tank. Featuring on the Rover 2 device, the Aspire Nautilus XS tank is a simple yet tidy looking tank. Supporting the Nautilus X coils, which are available in both plus and sub-ohm resistances. A great deal of detail has been spent on the build, with a well machined top cap, and incorporated heat sink fins designed to spread heat evenly to keep the drip tip cool when vaping. The drip itself is made from PEEK material making it extremely resistant to heat. All in all the Nautilus XS delivers a lovely smooth vape.

A top adjustable and top fill tank, the XS tank is equipped with two large airflow holes which allow for fine tuning the restriction. Filling the tank is also a joy as it does away with the small filling port, and is more of an “open tank” filling style. We’ve slotted this tank in under Mouth to lung but with the new 0.7ohm mesh coil it could just as easily be a top ranking sub-ohm tank.

8 - INNOKIN ZLIDE
If you’ve tried (and loved) the Zenith tank from Innokin before, the Zlide might just knock it off the top spot for you. Innokin listened to customer feedback and tweaked a few things to make a streamlined, highly functional and mess free tank - all while keeping that affordable price tag. Measuring in at 22mm in diameter, this mouth to lung tank is a great choice for slim and lower powered mods. When it comes to refilling, there’s no need to unscrew the top cap, just slide the top open to expose the fill port. The coloured drip tips are more narrow to enhance flavour as well as being interchangeable (just in case you wanted to pop a different coloured option on there). At the base of the tank you’ll find adjustable airflow, allowing you to close it right down to a tight MTL draw, or keep it open for a more airy inhale instead.

Aside from its updated design, the Zlide is also capable of both mouth to lung and direct to lung vaping. If you’ve wanted to try Sub Ohm vaping out before but your old tank didn’t allow it, the Zlide could provide an affordable solution. You’ll get two coils with this tank, a 1.6ohm coil that works wonderfully with nic salts and high PG liquids, as well as a 0.48ohm option for high VG e-liquids and a direct to lung inhale.

9 - VAPORESSO VM 22
If you started with a Vaporesso kit when you first got into vaping, you might be familiar with the EUC coils. Well, now you’ve got a dedicated mouth to lung tank with improved performance that’s also compatible with those very same coils. The VM22, as the name suggests, measures in at 22mm in diameter and is constructed from durable stainless steel and Pyrex. The tank is fitted with a case that surrounds the glass, making it more resilient for any accidental drops as well as giving it a minimalist and slick appearance. Choose from a variety of colours from minimalist black or silver to something more vibrant like blue or rainbow.

Up top, the 510 drip tip helps enhance the flavour of your favourite e-liquid. To refill the VM22, just unscrew the top cap to expose the fill port. As far as e-liquid options go, you’re spoiled for choice. Included with the tank is a 1.0ohm coil for 50:50 e-liquids as well as a 0.6ohm coil for higher VG options and a direct to lung inhale (just in case you want to give that a whirl). Changing the coils themselves couldn’t be easier. Just open up the base of the tank, pull the old coil out then press the new one into place.

10 - ASPIRE TIGON
Arguably the most versatile option on the list it is the Aspire Tigon tank. Perfect for low to moderate wattage output, the Tigon can be used to both mouth to lung and direct to lung vaping depending on how you set it up. For a mouth to lung vape, pick the 1.2ohm coil. There’s a narrow drip tip to help enhance flavour and make for a more restricted inhale. You’ve also got air holes in the adjustable airflow on one side at the base of the tank allowing for a tight inhale to a more loose draw. Use this coil with anything from nic salts to regular 50:50 e-liquids. If you want to use it for a Sub Ohm experience, you’ve also got a 0.4ohm coil to use with high VG e-liquids that can be paired with the shorter and wider drip tip. At the base of the tank, swivel the airflow over to the slot to get a more airy inhale for bigger clouds.

Aside from being an incredibly capable tank, it’s also remarkable leak proof and low maintenance. To refill, just lift the top cap and slide it back to expose the fill port. Changing coils is also totally mess free. Remove the base of the tank and pull out the old coil. You needn’t worry about waiting until your tank is empty either - a metal sleeve springs into place when you remove the coil so not a single drop of e-liquid can escape.

Nice review, I love to contemplate how vape market is evolving, every new product is really better than the previous one. Especially I enjoy new vape batteries with longer life and smaller size, rather comfortable.
